We build our classes around the idea that the diversity of music we can make on our drums emerges out of our relationship to each unique drum. Students work to increase their abilities to understand and apply the core movement fundamentals that can produce energetic and engaging play.
Since the songs we learn to help us develop these skills are mostly ensemble pieces for performance, classes also focus on stagecraft, mutual appreciation and respect of all players’ abilities, and the skills needed to play in a group.
Students are urged to attend regional taiko concerts, workshops by internationally recognized teachers, and the North American Taiko Conferences. Travel to workshops and events in Japan is also encouraged.
We welcome prospective taiko players at all levels. Taiko is a craft, and there is always something new to learn.
We are happy to announce that we are restarting our adult beginner classes in May 2023!!
Many of you who have taken classes are familiar with our practice space in Santa Fe. We have been able to use the recent downtime as an opportunity to increase our floor space by half and dramatically improve our ventilation and air filtration capability. The increased floor space will support better physical distancing during classes and the increased ventilation will serve us well not only against current viruses but also the fire smoke and allergy seasons.
So, if you were taking classes with us previously and still have your drumsticks, hang on to those bachi!
