Our performing group builds most of our own drums. Our relationship to each taiko is one of the bases of our performing crafts. Therefore we study drum building to form a deeper respect for drum-making culture, materials and processes, and understanding of this in the context of storage, transport, stagecraft and maintenance.
Craft aspects of taiko as a performing art are reflected in the craft of making taiko.
Advanced students are encouraged to study making their own taiko.
We develop and refine skills such as mental focus, efficiency of tool selection and movement, minimizing wasted effort and materials, and the flow of the drum-making processes.
We believe this understanding of craft in all aspects contributes to our results both in practice, rehearsals and onstage.
